NJDOT announces northbound lane
closure on Route 52 Causeway
Causeway replacement project progresses
(Trenton) -- The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) announced
that the right northbound lane over the Route 52 Causeway in Ocean
City and Somers Point will be closed to traffic from September 17,
2007 through May 14, 2008.
Route 52 southbound will continue to operate with two travel lanes,
while northbound traffic will be limited to one lane. Two northbound
lanes will be available during designated holiday periods.
The closure is necessary to NJDOTs continued progress on
the Route 52 Causeway replacement project. The initial phase of
construction that is underway includes the replacement of 1.2 miles
of the interior portion of the 73-year-old Route 52 causeway from
Elbow Island to Garretts Island. By Memorial Day 2008, NJDOT
will build a new northbound bridge east of the existing causeway.
Traffic will then be shifted from the old causeway, which will be
demolished to make way for the new southbound roadway, which will
be completed by fall 2009.
Variable Message Signs have been along the Garden State Parkway,
Route 52 and Route 559 to inform motorists of the lane closure and
other traffic impacts. Real time travel and construction information
is available online at https://nj-dot.nj.gov/transportation/commuter/
for emergency information.
