NJDOT begins intersection improvements to Routes 23 and 94 in Hamburg
(Trenton) - Commissioner Kris Kolluri today announced that the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) will begin a project to improve the Route 23 and Route 94 intersection in Hamburg Township, Sussex County.
"Improving this intersection will make traveling downtown in Hamburg
Borough safer," said Commissioner Kolluri. "Safety is paramount to
residents who travel this intersection on a daily basis, and we are
pleased to have been able to work closely with the local officials to
bring this important project to construction."
The $5.8 million, state-funded project will begin construction on
Friday, March 7. NJDOT will realign and widen the existing intersection
of Routes 23 and 94 and provide dedicated left turn lanes on all four
approaches to the intersection. The existing traffic signal will be
reconstructed to accommodate the new lane configuration. The project
will also include pedestrian safety improvements including additional
cross walks, traffic signals with pedestrian push buttons, new sidewalks
and brick borders between the curb and sidewalk. In addition, NJDOT will
provide a new thirteen space municipal parking lot at the corner of
Route 23 and Linwood Avenue and a small park situated on the southwest corner of the Route 23 and 94 intersection.
The project will also include the construction of a new local street,
the Orchard Street Extension, with ten diagonal parking stalls,
sidewalks and crosswalks. The proposed street will intersect with Route
94 and Main Street. The project is scheduled for completion in fall
2010.
Starting on the night of Monday, March 24, NJDOT will begin utility
relocation and demolition work. This will require temporary overnight
lane closures with alternating traffic and temporary daytime shoulder
closings. Routes 23 and 94 will remain open to traffic for the majority
of the project. All work is weather permitting.
Temporary traffic detours will be required along Linwood Avenue and Main
Street for short durations. The detour routes will be coordinated with
the Borough of Hamburg and residents and businesses will be notified in
advance.
NJDOT will place two variable messaging signs at each end of on Routes
23 and 94 to inform motorists of the construction and detours. Real
time travel and construction information is available online at
www.njcommuter.com. Motorists are encouraged to drive carefully to
protect themselves and workers in the construction zone.
