NJDOT completes Route 46
Van Houten Avenue improvements

(Trenton)- Commissioner Kris Kolluri today announced that the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) substantially completed the Route 46 and Van Houten Avenue/Grove Street interchange improvement project in Clifton, Passaic County.

“Replacing our aging transportation infrastructure is one of New Jersey’s top priorities,” said Governor Jon S. Corzine. “The completion of the new, redesigned intersection of Van Houten Avenue, Grove Street and Route 46 will improve safety and relieve congestion.”

"I am pleased that the Route 46 Van Houten Avenue/Grove Street project has finally come to a conclusion," stated Representative William J. Pascrell, Jr., who earmarked $13 million dollars for the project. "I thank the people of Clifton for being patient throughout the project's construction and ensure neighboring residents that this modernized interchange will dramatically improve the quality of life in Clifton.”

As part of the federally funded, $27 million project, NJDOT replaced the Van Houten Avenue Bridge over Route 46 and reconstructed Route 46 from Rock Hill Road to Grove Street. NJDOT also added acceleration, deceleration and auxiliary lanes to Route 46 from Rock Hill Road to Grove Street. In addition, NJDOT added a new traffic signal and reconstructed the ramps in the vicinity of the Grove Street and Van Houten Avenue intersection.

The new Van Houten Bridge opened to traffic in January 2008. NJDOT also repaved Route 46 eastbound and westbound and its side streets, installed new curbs, sidewalks, and overhead signs, and performed electrical work in order to maximize the safety improvements throughout the interchange.
