NJDOT opens bidding process for
stimulus-funded transportation projects
(Trenton) – Commissioner Stephen Dilts today announced that the New Jersey Department of Transportation is accepting bids for the construction of three critical transportation projects funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).
“Today’s contract advertisement is a major milestone in the process of creating jobs and improving our infrastructure through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act,” said Governor Jon S. Corzine. “NJDOT will continue to expedite its contracting process in order to put New Jersey residents to work as quickly as possible. I encourage New Jersey contractors, and particularly small and disadvantaged businesses, to compete for these critical transportation improvement projects.”
NJDOT solicited bids for two contracts to paint 51 bridges on I-280 and Route 1&9 Truck in Essex and Hudson counties. Painting these bridges will prevent their decay and deterioration. NJDOT advertised a contract to paint 49 bridges on I-280 in East Orange, Orange, Newark and West Orange. ARRA provides $15.3 million in funding for this project. In addition, NJDOT advertised a contract to paint two moveable bridges on U.S. 1 & 9 Truck Route. The bridges span the Hackensack and Passaic rivers in Jersey City, Kearny and Newark. NJDOT will use $30 million in ARRA funds to paint the Route 1 & 9 bridges.
NJDOT also solicited bids for improvements to Route 46 and Main Street in Lodi, Bergen County. The project consists of the replacement of two bridges on Route 46, the addition of auxiliary lanes, and major roadway and drainage improvements. $47.6 million in ARRA funds will be dedicated to this project.
The ARRA will stimulate New Jersey's economy by creating or supporting thousands of transportation-related jobs and making long-term improvements to roads, bridges and the transit system. New Jersey’s transportation allocation includes $652 million for highways and bridges and approximately $425 million for transit. That total includes approximately $162 million for county and local transportation priorities and approximately $19.5 million for transportation enhancement projects.
The New Jersey Department of Transportation’s (NJDOT) $469 million in ARRA funding will address the needs of aging bridges by replacing movable bridges, rehabilitating bridge decks and beams, and other bridge maintenance. In addition, NJDOT will use federal stimulus funding to reconstruct and resurface highways and improve drainage systems and highway safety. NJDOT plans to obligate all of this funding in the next 120 days and to complete most of its stimulus-funded work within one year.
