NJDOT to improve I-80/I-287
interchange in Parsippany
Ramp improvements will increase truck safety and congestion
(Trenton) – New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) Commissioner Stephen Dilts today announced the start of a safety and congestion improvement project at the interchange of I-80 and I-287 in Parsippany/Troy Hills, Morris County. NJDOT will realign three entrance and exit ramps at the interchange and install new overhead signs.
“The I-80/I-287 improvement project will increase the safety of the ramps that link these critical commercial corridors and help reduce the frequency of accidents in which trucks overturn,” said Governor Jon S. Corzine.
On Friday, April 17, NJDOT will begin construction by reducing the width of the lanes on I-287 northbound and shifting the roadway to the right between mileposts 41.5 and 41.7. In addition, NJDOT will close the I-287 northbound left shoulder from milepost 41.50 to milepost 41.65 and the I-287 northbound right shoulder from milepost 41.50 to 41.70. At the same time, NJDOT will close the I-287 southbound left shoulder between mileposts 41.50 and 41.70. All travel lanes will remain open.
On Friday night, April 24, NJDOT will introduce temporary overnight closures of the I-80 eastbound ramp to I-287 northbound and the I-287 northbound left shoulder from milepost 42.09 to milepost 42.39, which enters I-287 northbound on the left side of the roadway. The ramp will be closed Friday night, April 24 from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. the following morning, Saturday night, April 25 from 11 p.m. to 8 a.m. the following morning and Sunday night, April 26 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning.
During the ramp closures, I-80 eastbound traffic bound for I-287 northbound will be detoured at Exit 43 to I-287 southbound and will take Exit 40A onto Parsippany Road southbound to the ramp for I-287 northbound.
The $9.8 million project will improve safety and traffic flow throughout the I-80 and I-287 interchange by realigning three entrance and exit ramps. NJDOT will realign the ramp from I-80 westbound onto I-287 northbound, the ramp from I-287 northbound onto I-80 westbound and the ramp from Littleton Road to I-287 northbound. Two overhead sign structures on both I-80 and I-287 will be replaced as part of this project, and three new overhead sign structures will be constructed. The project is scheduled for completion in December 2010.
Variable message signs on I-80 and I-287 will inform motorists of changes in traffic operations during construction. Real-time traffic updates are available at www.511nj.org.
