NJDOT to reconfigure the Route 12
and Main Street traffic circle in Flemington

(Trenton) - Commissioner Stephen Dilts today announced that the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) will begin a $2.6 million project to convert the existing Route 12 and Main Street traffic circle in Flemington Borough, Hunterdon County into a modern roundabout.

“Reconfiguring this outdated traffic circle will improve safety on Route 12 and Main Street in downtown Flemington,” said Governor Jon S. Corzine.

Starting Monday, August 3, NJDOT will widen Route 12 westbound and remove the traffic islands at the approaches to the existing circle. The project will convert the existing traffic circle to a modern roundabout in order to improve safety at the intersection of Route 12 and Main Street. In addition, NJDOT will resurface Route 12 from the BR&W railroad to the Route 202/31 Flemington Circle.

In order to convert the existing traffic circle to a modern roundabout, NJDOT will reduce the width of the roadway approaches to the roundabout. The reduced width of the roadway approaches will cause traffic to slow down, providing safer travel inside the roundabout. NJDOT will also improve signs and pavement markings to direct motorists approaching the roundabout to yield to traffic in the roundabout. The project is scheduled for completion in April 2010.

Single lane closures may take place on Route 12 during the following hours:

In the two-lane section of Route 12, single lane closures may take place on Mondays to Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. the next day, on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. to Saturdays at 8 a.m., from Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. to Sundays at 9 a.m. and from Sundays at 7 p.m. to Mondays at 6 a.m.

In the four-lane section of Route 12, single-lane closures may take place Mondays to Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. the next day, on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. to Saturdays at 8 a.m., from Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. to Sundays at 9 a.m. and from Sundays at 7 p.m. to Mondays at 6 a.m.

Variable message signs have been installed on Route 12 to inform motorists of traffic pattern changes during construction. Construction information and real-time traffic updates are available at www.511nj.org.
