NJDOT to resurface eight miles of Route 80 in Bergen and Passaic counties

$16.4 million in federal funding will stimulate economic recovery

(Trenton) –New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) Commissioner Stephen Dilts today announced that NJDOT will use American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funding to resurface approximately eight miles of Route 80 eastbound from west of Madison Avenue to Polify Road in Bergen and Passaic counties. In addition, NJDOT will resurface .75 miles of I-80 westbound in Paterson, Passaic County.

“The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is providing much-needed infrastructure improvements along this critical segment of Route 80 while helping to stimulate New Jersey’s economy through investment and the creation of new construction jobs for our citizens,” said Governor Jon S. Corzine.

“Resurfacing this section of Route 80 will enhance safety for motorists and preserve this much-used roadway,” Commissioner Dilts said.

On Monday, August 10, NJDOT will begin a $1.4 million, federally-funded project to resurface I-80 in both directions from mileposts 58.25 to 58.98 in Paterson, Passaic County. NJDOT also will grind the concrete surface in order to increase skid resistance and safety in wet weather.

NJDOT will perform the work overnight in order to minimize traffic impacts. NJDOT will close one to two lanes of I-80 in Paterson from Monday through Thursday from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following morning, from Friday at 8 p.m. to Saturday at 8 a.m., from Saturday at 10 p.m. to Sunday at 8 a.m., and from Sunday at 8 p.m. to Monday at 6 a.m. The project is scheduled for completion in October 2009.

In mid-August, NJDOT will begin a $15 million ARRA-funded project to resurface and repair I-80 eastbound from milepost 58.2 to milepost 65.4 in Paterson, Elmwood Park, Saddle Brook, Lodi and Hackensack. Construction will begin at the Route 19 interchange at milepost 58.2 in Paterson.

As part of this project, NJDOT will also repair 25 bridge decks along this segment of I-80, including at the Route 19 interchange. The project is scheduled for completion in December 2010.

NJDOT will implement single and double lane closures on this portion of I-80. The following lane closures are scheduled to start August 18:

On the I-80 eastbound local lanes, single-lane closures may be necessary from Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning, on Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. to Saturday at 6 a.m., from Saturday at 9 p.m. to Sunday at 8 a.m., and from Sunday at 9 p.m. to Monday at 5 a.m. On the I-80 eastbound local lanes, double-lane closures may be necessary from Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. the next day, from Friday at 11 p.m. to Saturday at 5 a.m., from Saturday at 11 p.m. to Sunday at 7 a.m., and from Sunday at 11 p.m. to Monday at 4 a.m.
On I-80 eastbound express lanes, single-lane closures may be necessary from Monday through Thursday from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. the following day, on Friday from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, from Saturday at 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, and from Sunday at 9 p.m. to Monday at 5 a.m.

ARRA will stimulate New Jersey's economy by creating or supporting thousands of transportation-related jobs and making long-term improvements to roads, bridges and the transit system. New Jersey's transportation allocation includes $652 million for highways and bridges and approximately $425 million for transit. That total includes approximately $164 million for county and local transportation priorities and approximately $19.5 million for transportation enhancement projects."
