NJDOT to replace Sixth Street
bridge over NJ TRANSIT in Newark

(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced the upcoming closure of Sixth Street in Newark as construction progresses on a project to replace the Third Street, Fifth Street, Sixth Street, Seventh Street and Roseville Avenue bridge decks over the NJ TRANSIT Morristown line in Newark.

On Thursday, August 13, NJDOT reopened the newly reconstructed Third Street Bridge to traffic. On Monday, August 17, NJDOT will close the Sixth Street Bridge from Orange Street to Seventh Avenue. Sixth Street is a one-way southbound roadway. Sixth Street traffic will take Seventh Avenue to Second Street to Orange Street to Sixth Street.

NJDOT began construction in October 2007 and has replaced the Fifth and Third Street bridges. Seventh Street remains closed to traffic for construction, and work recently began on the western sidewalk of the Roseville Avenue Bridge. NJDOT is replacing each bridge individually by temporarily closing each street on which a bridge is being replaced and implementing local detours. Construction may impact overnight train and bus service at Roseville Avenue.

The $13.5 million project includes drainage improvements, resurfacing, sidewalk installation and curb placement on the approaches to the Third Street, Fifth Street, Sixth Street, Seventh Street and Roseville Avenue bridges. In addition, NJDOT will improve traffic signals at the bridge approaches and at the intersections of Roseville Avenue and Orange Street, Roseville Avenue and Seventh Avenue and Orange Street and Sixth Avenue. The project is scheduled to be completed in fall 2010.
