NJDOT to improve safety and operational
flow on Route 73 in Moorestown and Maple Shade
(Trenton) – Commissioner Stephen Dilts today announced that the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) will make safety improvements and operational upgrades to Route 73 in Moorestown and Maple Shade, Burlington County.
“This $18 million operational improvement project will increase safety and decrease congestion along this busy stretch of Route 73 in Burlington County,” said Commissioner Dilts.
The week of November 16, NJDOT will begin preliminary construction operations on Route 73. Initial construction operations will include utility relocation, drainage upgrades, construction of a new concrete median barrier and roadway realignment work.
NJDOT will shift Route 73 traffic to the right in both directions, utilizing the existing shoulders as travel lanes. Two lanes of Route 73 will be maintained during normal work hours. The work zone will be established in the center portion of Route 73 from the Route 41 overpass to the vicinity of the Conrail railroad bridge (mileposts 28.73 to 29.98) Nighttime temporary lane closures will be allowed on Route 73, as needed.
NJDOT will increase safety and reduce congestion throughout this stretch of Route 73 by constructing an additional travel lane in each direction from south of Fellowship Road/Fox Meadow Drive to East Main Street/Camden Avenue (CR-537). NJDOT will realign and widen the Route 73 and Fellowship Road/Fox Meadow Drive interchange to provide new dedicated turning lanes. The East Main Street/Camden Avenue bridge deck over Route 73 will be replaced and two new traffic signals will be installed on the East Main Street/Camden Avenue exit ramps. NJDOT will also eliminate the free-flow movement from Fellowship Road to Route 73 southbound. The drainage system will be upgraded around the East Main Street/Camden Avenue overpass to alleviate flooding in the area.
The state-funded project is anticipated for completion in spring 2012.
Variable message signs will notify motorists of any upcoming traffic pattern changes. NJDOT provides emergency roadway information, construction schedule updates and real time traffic information and images at www.511nj.org.
