I-287 traffic pattern changes coming in Piscataway
NJDOT to reconstruct pavement under bridge decks
(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced a series of weekend traffic pattern changes will be implemented on I-287 at the River Road overpass and the Washington Avenue overpass in Piscataway Township, Middlesex County to reconstruct pavement under the bridges.
On Friday night, May 7, NJDOT will begin temporary overnight lane reductions on I-287 in both directions requiring lane shifts for the entire weekend from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday at each location. Initially traffic will be shifted to the right side of the roadway, followed by traffic shifts to the left side as work progresses. The work will be accomplished over four weekends, one location per weekend weather permitting.
- 9 p.m. Friday, May 7 - NJDOT will reduce I-287 southbound traffic to two lanes and shift all lanes to the right under River Road. All lanes will reopen at 5 a.m. Monday, May 10.
- 9 p.m. Friday, May 14 - NJDOT will reduce I-287 southbound traffic to two lanes and shift all lanes to the right under Washington Avenue. All lanes will reopen at 5 a.m. Monday, May 17.
- 9 p.m. Friday, May 21 - NJDOT will reduce I-287 northbound traffic to two lanes and shift all lanes to the left under Washington Avenue. All lanes will reopen at 5 a.m. Monday, May 24.
- 9 p.m. Friday, June 4 - NJDOT will reduce I-287 northbound traffic to two lanes and shift all lanes to the left under River Road. All lanes will reopen at 5 a.m. Monday, June 7.
The traffic shifts are associated with an ongoing $29 million roadway rehabilitation project that will provide motorist safety improvements over approximately seven miles of I-287 between Stelton Road in Piscataway, Middlesex County and Main Street in Franklin Township, Somerset County. This work will extend the lifespan of the roadway by more than 15 years and the new bridge decks by 50 years. The project began in August 2009 and is expected to be substantially completed by the end of 2011.
Variable message signs will notify motorists of any upcoming traffic pattern changes. NJDOT provides emergency roadway information, construction schedule updates and real time traffic information and images at www.511nj.org.
