NJDOT launches project-specific widgets
for easy access to traffic information

Web applications now available for
I-295 roadway reconstruction projects

(Trenton) - Obtaining up-to-the-minute information for travel through the I-295 construction zones is easier than ever with new web application “widgets” that the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) is now providing on the www.511nj.org homepage.

Starting today, NJDOT will post widgets on the 511 homepage that simplify the process of getting real-time traffic information in major construction zones. By the end of the summer, widgets will be available for customers to embed on the home page of their computer.

“This cutting-edge technology helps us get information to our customers in an efficient and convenient manner,” said NJDOT Commissioner Jim Simpson. “This initiative demonstrates our commitment to being customer-focused and citizen-centered.”

The two on-going Interstate 295 construction projects in Gloucester/Camden counties and Burlington County will be the first projects where real time information will be available in a widget format. Widgets eliminate the need to navigate through a website. NJDOT plans to add more project-specific widgets to the site in the coming months.
Each widget will provide visitors a snap shot of travel times through the construction zone as well as a graphic display of active incidents, congestion, or construction that may be happening within the project limits. In addition, visitors can see travel speeds as well as traffic camera images.

NJDOT’s real time traffic Web site, www.511nj.org, offers interactive maps and displays traffic incidents. The map based Web site offers motorists real-time traffic conditions on State highways, interstate highways, the Garden State Parkway, the New Jersey Turnpike and the Atlantic City Expressway. The Web site highlights incidents, delays, construction, weather related closures and special events. All of this information will be available through the widgets.

I-295 project details

NJDOT is rehabilitating I-295 in two work zones that include sections in Barrington, Bellmawr, Cherry Hill, Haddon Heights, Haddonfield, Lawnside and Tavistock in Camden County and West Deptford and Westville in Gloucester County. The $70 million project started in June 2009 on the northbound lanes and will switch to the southbound lanes in 2011. The project is scheduled for completion in summer 2012.

The second project is a pavement rehabilitation project on an 11-mile stretch of Route 295 in both directions from Interchange 45/ Rancocas-Mount Holly Road (County Route 626) in Westampton to Interchange 57/ Route 130 in Bordentown, Burlington County. The $85 million project also includes 10 bridge deck repairs, upgrading acceleration and deceleration lanes at the interchanges, and new median crossovers and guide rails. Construction started in March 2010.
