NJDOT announces upcoming closure of Route 94 in Vernon Township for railroad crossing repairs

(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced that a portion of Route 94 in Vernon Township, Sussex County will be closed for five business days in order to rehabilitate a New York, Susquehanna & Western railroad grade crossing.

Route 94 will close at the railroad crossing east of the split with McAfee-Glenwood Road (CR 517) at 9:00 a.m. Monday, August 16 and will reopen by 5 p.m. Friday, August 20.

The following detours will be implemented during the Route 94 closure:

• Northbound traffic will use McAfee-Glenwood Road (CR 517) to Vernon Crossing Road to Route 94.

• Southbound traffic will use Vernon Crossing Road to McAfee-Glenwood Road to Route 94.

Route 94 is a major thoroughfare in Vernon Township and the detour routes have been coordinated with the Vernon Township police department. Access to all businesses and residences along Route 94 between Vernon Crossing Road and the railroad crossing will be maintained.

In order to provide a safer and smoother railroad crossing on Route 94, NJDOT will replace the existing crossing with a new concrete freight rail crossing and repave the asphalt approaches. The cost of the work is $250,000.

This project is part of NJDOT’s ongoing railroad grade-crossing safety program, which repairs, upgrades or removes approximately 30 crossings each year. Real time traffic information is available at www.511nj.org
