NJDOT suspends construction for upcoming
holiday weekends
Standard holiday procedure promotes safety
and reduces congestion

(Trenton) - Commissioner James Simpson today announced that the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) will suspend all construction that impacts traffic over the next two weekends in order to reduce congestion during the holiday season.

"NJDOT is taking this appropriate measure to ensure safety and mobility for New Jersey New Jersey residents and their visitors as they celebrate the holidays," Simpson said.

At 6 a.m. on Thursday, December 23, NJDOT suspended all construction work that affects travel lanes on state highways. NJDOT will resume its construction schedule at noon on Monday, December 27.

NJDOT also will suspend construction work that affects travel lanes on state highways the following week from 6 a.m. on Thursday, December 30 to noon on Monday, January 3, 2011.

NJDOT will permit lane closures for emergency purposes only.

In addition to suspending construction work, NJDOT announced the following statewide highway safety tools:

• New Jersey recently introduced two new smart travel tools in time for the holiday weekend, the “Trumpit” audio traffic alert application for iPhones and the new 511 Popular Driving Times widget. More information is available at www.511nj.org, NJDOT’s real time traffic Web site.

• The state-of-the-art Statewide Traffic Management Center enables NJDOT, the New Jersey Turnpike Authority and the New Jersey State Police to manage and respond to accidents, adverse weather, special events and congestion. The facility operates 24 hours per day, seven days per week.

• Motorists can call 511 anytime for personalized real-time traffic information.

• Motorists may also subscribe to MyNJ511, a Personalized Traveler Service that sends free, real-time traffic alerts to any web-enabled communication device.
