NJDOT opens new Route 1&9T northbound viaduct over St. Paul’s Avenue in Jersey City

(Trenton) - NJDOT officials today announced that traffic has been placed onto the newly constructed Route 1&9T northbound viaduct over St. Paul’s Avenue in Jersey City, Hudson County as of Friday night, August 26.

In order to access Route 1&9 northbound towards the Lincoln Tunnel or the George Washington Bridge, Route 1&9T northbound and Route 7 eastbound motorists will now use the new flyover ramp and viaduct which carries traffic over St. Paul’s Avenue and the Tonnelle Circle.

Motorists destined for the Holland Tunnel and/or the Jersey City waterfront via the Tonnelle Circle will remain on the existing 1&9T northbound viaduct. This traffic pattern will remain in place for approximately 3 more weeks, at which time the old viaduct will be permanently closed and demolished. NJDOT will provide information on new traffic pattern to take effect at that time.

NJDOT has replaced the Routes 1&9T viaduct over St. Paul's Avenue with a new structure on a new alignment north of the present structure. NJDOT shifted Route 1&9T southbound traffic onto the new viaduct in February 2011. The old viaduct had been constructed in 1928 and is structurally deficient and functionally obsolete.

NJDOT’s contractor, George Harms Construction Co., will now shift the construction focus to the the permanent new ramp system that will accommodate access between the numerous state and local roadways in this location.

The $210 million federally funded project is building new approach roads to safely connect to Route 1&9T, Route 7, Pulaski Skyway, Route 139, Route 1&9 north of Tonnelle Circle and local streets in Jersey City. The project will provide a more continuous flow of traffic and safer connections to the roadways that form a vital link to this region's transportation network. Construction completion is anticipated in spring 2013.

NJDOT will employ Variable Message Signs to inform motorists of the new traffic patterns.
