Tonnelle Avenue ramp to Pulaski Skyway to be closed
in Jersey City
Route 1&9T/St. Paul’s Avenue viaduct project continues to progress

(Trenton) - NJDOT officials today announced that the Route 1&9/Tonnelle Avenue southbound ramp that connects motorists to the Route 1&9 Pulaski Skyway southbound (heading west) is scheduled to be closed this Friday night, October 14, for continued reconstruction efforts around the St. Paul’s Avenue viaduct in Jersey City.

NJDOT anticipates the ramp remaining closed to traffic for up to one year. A new ramp, with improved geometry and sight-distance for safer traffic merging, is being constructed and the existing ramp will be demolished.

• Route 1&9/Tonnelle Avenue southbound motorists headed for the Pulaski Skyway will be detoured to Route 1&9T southbound, running parallel to the Skyway, and will rejoin Route 1&9 southbound in Newark.

• Kennedy Boulevard southbound motorists that normally utilize the Route 139 westbound ramp to connect to the Skyway will now be directed to Route 1&9/Tonnele Avenue northbound to the County Road/Manhattan Avenue U-turn to Route 1&9 southbound to follow the same detour described above.

The Department’s $210 million, federally-funded project is building new approach roads to safely connect Route 1&9T, Route 7, the Pulaski Skyway, Route 139, Route 1&9 north of Tonnele Circle and local streets in Jersey City. The project will provide a more continuous flow of traffic and safer connections to the roadways that form a vital link to this region's transportation network.

Last month, the old Route 1&9T viaduct over St. Paul’s Avenue, which was built in 1928, was permanently closed and all motorists have been shifted onto the new viaduct. NJDOT has replaced the Routes 1&9T viaduct over St. Paul's Avenue with a new structure on a new alignment north of the present structure.

NJDOT’s contractor, George Harms Construction Co., is now demolishing the old viaduct and constructing the permanent new ramp system that will accommodate access between the numerous state and local roadways in this location. Construction completion is anticipated in spring 2013.

Variable Message Signs are in place to inform motorists of the closure and new traffic patterns.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website for construction updates and real-time travel information.
