NJDOT to reconstruct Route 322 bridge
over Big Ditch in Hamilton
(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced a project to reconstruct the Route 322 (Black Horse Pike) bridge over the Big Ditch creek in Hamilton Township, Atlantic County.
The $3.6 million federally-funded project will fully replace the existing, structurally deficient at-grade bridge in both directions and resurface the bridge approaches. The existing bridge was built in 1930 and is located near milepost 43, about midway between Weymouth Road and Tamminen Road.
Beginning this week, NJDOT’s contractor, Agate Construction, is scheduled to set up the new construction zone on the eastbound side of the bridge. To accommodate that work, NJDOT will close the eastbound side of the bridge with two-way traffic shifted onto the westbound travel lanes. Route 322 will be reduced from two travel lanes in each direction to one travel lane in each direction. NJDOT has scheduled the construction in stages so that one travel lane on Route 322 in both directions will remain open to traffic at all times.
Approximately 18,000 vehicles use this bridge every day to cross the Big Ditch creek in Lake Lenape Park, but that number rises in the summer season. Variable message signs will notify motorists of upcoming traffic pattern changes.
NJDOT anticipates the project being completed in spring 2013.
