Traffic pattern changes announced
for rockfall mitigation project on Route 46 and I-80

(Trenton) - NJDOT officials today announced a construction stage change and associated traffic pattern shifts for the ongoing project to remove loose rock and stabilize rocky outcrops along sections of Interstate 80 in Allamuchy Township, Warren County and Route 46 in Roxbury Township, Morris County. Rockfall mitigation operations began along I-80 in December and will now commence on Route 46.

NJDOT’s contractor, H&G Contractors Inc., is scheduled to close the outside shoulders along Route 46, between mileposts 32.8 and 33, in both directions this weekend for the construction zone set up at this location. Once the construction zones are established along the side of Route 46 in both directions, single-lane closures of the outside right lanes will be allowed during off-peak and overnight hours.

In addition, the right-most travel lane along I-80 westbound will be reopened this weekend, between mileposts 15.5 and 15.7. The right-lane has been closed at this location since early-December 2011. The outside shoulder will stay closed as the construction zone remains active adjacent to the highway.

NJDOT will continue to permit the temporary closure of all lanes on either highway for rock scaling operations for 15-minute periods between 12 a.m. and 4 a.m., only as needed. No closures will be permitted on weekends.

The contractor is constructing wire mesh slope protection on the face of the rock outcrop along both highways, and constructing new guide rail along the base of the rock embankments. A new rock catch fence will also be installed along I-80 westbound. NJDOT remains on track to complete the project in spring 2012.

Variable Message Signs will be used to inform motorists of traffic pattern changes during construction. NJDOT provides emergency roadway information, construction schedule updates and real time traffic information and images at www.511nj.org.
