Route 17 northbound traffic shift announced
for bridge over I-80 in Bergen County
(Trenton) - NJDOT officials today announced that the next stage of construction is set to begin on the Route 17 northbound bridge deck over Interstate 80 in Hackensack, Bergen County.
On Friday night, February 17, NJDOT’s contractor, Anselmi & DeCicco, will shift traffic onto the newly reconstructed western side of the bridge and establish the new work zone on the eastern side of Route 17 northbound. Single-lane closures will be required overnight to complete the stage change, with the new traffic pattern expected to be in place by about 5 a.m. Saturday, February 18.
The bridge deck replacement work is being accomplished in stages so that two travel lanes on Route 17 northbound will remain open to traffic during daytime and peak period hours.
The $9.9 million project is replacing the existing, structurally deficient bridge deck and superstructure carrying Route 17 northbound across all lanes of I-80. The bridge is being widened to provide a new deceleration lane from the left exiting to South Summit Avenue. The project began construction in March 2011 and is scheduled for completion in fall 2012.
NJDOT is also replacing the nearby South Summit Avenue bridge deck over I-80 and Route 17 southbound. The Route 17 northbound ramp to South Summit Avenue in Hackensack remains closed to traffic as part of that project. All traffic pattern changes and impacts for both projects are being coordinated.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website for construction updates and real-time travel information.
