NJDOT opens new Roseville Avenue bridge
over NJ TRANSIT in Newark
(Trenton) - NJDOT today announced that the Roseville Avenue bridge over NJ TRANSIT was reopened to traffic in Newark City on Friday, February 17. The bridge, which is owned by NJ TRANSIT and carries a local roadway over the rail line, had been closed since August 2010 for complete superstructure reconstruction.
The Roseville Avenue bridge is the fifth and final bridge to be reconstructed as part of the ongoing $16 million project that has already replaced the Third Street, Fifth Street, Sixth Street and Seventh Street bridge decks over NJ TRANSIT’s Morris & Essex Line. Each of the old bridges had been rated as structurally deficient and in need of major repair.
NJDOT’s contractor, Beaver Construction, began construction on the project in October 2007 on the Third and Fifth Street structures. Additional improvements were made at each location including roadway resurfacing, sidewalk and curb installation drainage upgrades and traffic signal upgrades.
Further bridge painting work and construction clean-up activities continue at this time, as well as minor repair work to the First and Second Street bridges, added to the contract. The majority of this work will be done underneath the bridges during overnight hours and will not impact motorists.
