Link between two Trenton streets near State House

to be restored

(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced a project to build a section of roadway in front of the Trenton War Memorial building, restoring a direct link for motorists between Barrack Street and Memorial Drive.

The purpose of this project is to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion at this central downtown location.

NJDOT’s contractor, Joseph DeFino Trucking Company, Inc, established a new work zone to the south of Barrack Street using construction barrier last week. Initial construction operations will include utility relocation and the installation of signage.

The majority of the $581,000 project will be constructed behind the barrier with no impact to motorists. Toward the end of the construction schedule, periodic single lane closures and traffic shifts may be necessary on the local roads at either end of the construction zone to tie in the new roadway.

The project will extend the southern terminus of Barrack Street from the West Lafayette Street intersection to connect with Memorial Drive. Motorists will then be able to access Route 29 northbound from the existing ramp connection on Memorial Drive.

The new 30-foot wide roadway extension will follow an alignment along the existing curb and sidewalk line to the west of the War Memorial Building. The new road will feature one 11-foot wide lane in each direction with 4-foot wide bicycle lanes. The new roadway will be constructed with concrete pavers to match the surrounding roads in this section of Trenton.

The existing traffic signals at the Barrack Street intersection with West Lafayette Street and the Memorial Drive/State House parking garage driveways will be upgraded and modified to accommodate the new roadway. Other amenities and improvements to be made include drainage upgrades, the installation of image detection cameras, ADA-compliant handicap ramps, and new signage and striping. The Barrack Street extension is expected to open this summer.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information.
