NJDOT to reconfigure Route 130 intersections
in North Brunswick
Adams Lane, Maple Meade Road and Wood Avenue intersections
to be upgraded

(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced the start of construction on a project to improve safety at three intersections in close proximity to each other along Route 130 in North Brunswick, Middlesex County.

“The safety improvements at these intersections also are designed to provide better traffic flow along Route 130 and to reduce congestion on the local roadway system in North Brunswick,” Commissioner James Simpson said.

NJDOT’s contractor, Green Construction, Inc., will begin preliminary construction operations this week, mobilizing the work zone and installing signage.

Route 130 carries two lanes of traffic in each direction through the area. All lanes on Route 130 will be maintained during daytime and peak period hours, with traffic shifts in place utilizing the existing highway shoulders. During overnight work, periodic single-lane and shoulder closures may be implemented.

The $8.5 million federally funded project aims to improve safety and reduce congestion by widening the state highway, allowing for safer turning movements. Route 130 northbound will be widened at Adams Lane to include a new dedicated right-turn lane to complement the existing left-turn lane and two through travel lanes.

Route 130 southbound will be widened at Adams Lane to include a new shared left turn/through travel lane and a shared right turn-through travel lanes. Traffic signal modifications are planned to accommodate the new turn movements at the intersection.

The existing Maple Meade Road (CR 695) lane onto Route 130 northbound will be closed, with all motorists directed to a reconfigured intersection to the south. The Route 130 intersection with Wood Avenue will be re-striped so that vehicles entering and exiting Wood Avenue will be limited to right turns only. A new preemptive traffic signal will be installed in front of North Brunswick Volunteer Fire Company No. 2 on Route 130.

New sidewalks and curbing will be provided and drainage improvements will also be made including the installation of three new water detention basins. Route 130 will then be milled and repaved between mileposts 80.9 and 81.5. NJDOT anticipates the project being completed in summer 2014.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check www.511nj.org for real-time travel information.
