Salem Street bridge over Route 10
to be closed for six months in Randolph

(Trenton) - NJDOT officials today announced that the Salem Street (CR 665) bridge over Route 10 will be closed to traffic, beginning this weekend, for approximately six months in Randolph Township, Morris County. This overpass provides access from Route 10 eastbound to Salem Street northbound and from Salem Street southbound to Route 10 eastbound.

At around 11 p.m. on Friday, March 16, the Salem Street overpass is scheduled to be closed to traffic. The following detour routes will be in effect during the closure:

  • Route 10 eastbound motorists destined for Salem Street will be directed past the exit to use the Franklin Road jughandle to U-turn onto Route 10 westbound to the Salem Street exit.
  • Salem Street passenger vehicles destined for Route 10 eastbound will be directed to Franklin Road east to the intersection with Route 10.
  • Large truck traffic (greater than 4 tons) on Salem Street destined for Route 10 eastbound will be directed to Route 10 westbound to use the Millbrook Avenue to U-turn onto Route 10 eastbound.

NJDOT’s contractor, Konkus Corporation, began initial utility relocation work and preliminary construction setup on the project last month. Reconstruction efforts are also underway at the Route 10 intersection with Franklin Road, located to the east of the Salem Street overpass, where minor improvements are being made to the traffic signal, sidewalks and lane striping.

The $2 million federally funded project will replace the existing, structurally deficient bridge superstructure, including the bridge deck, support beams, median pier cap and parapets. The reconstructed structure will be raised slightly to improve clearance beneath the bridge.

NJDOT will maintain three travel lanes on Route 10 in each direction below the overpass during peak period hours, utilizing traffic shifts. However, lane closures may be necessary on Route 10 during off-peak hours. The project is expected to be complete by the end of 2012.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. NJDOT provides emergency roadway information, construction schedule updates and real time traffic information and images at www.511nj.org.
