Hillsborough Road reopens as Route 206 Bypass project advances
(Trenton) - NJDOT officials announced that Hillsborough Road was reopened to traffic between Route 206 and Willow Road this morning in Hillsborough, Somerset County. Hillsborough Road had been closed at this location since April 2010 for local roadway work associated with the construction of the new Route 206 Bypass.
NJDOT’s contractor, Carbro Inc., has replaced the Hillsborough Road bridge superstructure over the CSX railroad tracks and reconstructed portions of Hillsborough Road to accommodate the new bypass that is being built.
With Hillsborough Road now reopened, NJDOT will close Homestead Road between Route 206 and Willow Road on or about Monday, March 26 to allow for the construction of a new bridge over CSX railroad on this local roadway. The following detours will be posted:
• Route 206 motorists headed to Homestead Road will be directed to Amwell Road to Willow Road south to Homestead Road.
• Homestead Road westbound motorists are directed to Willow Road north to Amwell Road to Route 206.
Construction began in August 2010 on the $43 million first contract to build a portion of the bypass between Hillsborough Road and Amwell Road. Work on this section of the bypass is expected to be completed by early 2013. Work will then shift to relocating utilities. The relocation of utilities will start in the summer of 2013 and will take approximately 18 months. Once utilities are relocated, the sites for the two end pieces of the bypass will be ready for construction.
When completed, the Route 206 bypass will shift through traffic onto a new 3.6-mile section of Route 206 to the east of the existing highway between Mountain View Road and Old Somerville Road, creating opportunities for the development of a town center along the current Route 206 in Hillsborough Township, Somerset County.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Real time travel and construction information is available online at www.511nj.org
