Route 50 improvements announced at two locations
in Atlantic and Cape May counties
Project includes more than five miles of repaving and repairs to bridge over Cedar Swamp Creek
(Trenton) - Work will begin next week on a project to improve two sections of Route 50 in Upper Township, Cape May County and Corbin City and Estell Manor in Atlantic County.
On Monday, March 26 NJDOT’s contractor, South State Inc., is scheduled to begin surface and joint repairs to the Route 50 bridge structure over Cedar Swamp Creek in Upper Township, requiring daytime traffic shifts between 6a.m. and 6 p.m. The work on the bridge is expected to last for approximately three weeks, with one week of single-lane closures with alternating traffic patterns over the bridge for the joint repairs.
In late-April resurfacing operations will begin on Route 50 in both directions from Somers Avenue (milepost 0.3), just west of the interchange with Route 9, to the vicinity of Perry Road (milepost 4.2) in Upper Township.
After the work is completed in Upper Township, the contractor will then mill and resurface Route 50 from just south of Carl Road (milepost 8.4) in Corbin City to Buena-Tuckahoe Road/CR 557 (milepost 9.9) in Estell Manor.
The resurfacing work will require the closure of one side of the highway at a time with detours in place for Route 50 southbound motorists. NJDOT will issue a traffic advisory with more details on the hours of paving activity and detour routes in advance of that work.
Dynamic Message Signs will notify motorists of the traffic pattern changes. The $1.9 million project is scheduled to be completed by the end of May, prior to the busy Jersey Shore summer season.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website real-time travel information.
