Route 36 to be closed for railroad-crossing repairs
in Long Branch
Highway scheduled to be closed in both directions for up to 12 days
(Trenton) - NJDOT officials today announced that a portion of Route 36 (Joline Avenue) is scheduled to be closed in both directions for twelve days to rehabilitate a NJ TRANSIT North Jersey Coast Line railroad grade crossing in Long Branch City, Monmouth County.
Route 36 will be fully closed to traffic at the railroad crossing just east of Washington Street starting around 9 a.m. on Thursday, April 12. The closure will remain in place through Tuesday, April 24. If the repair work is finished earlier than scheduled, the highway will be reopened accordingly.
• Motorists heading east on Route 36 will be directed to take Branchport Avenue north to Atlantic Avenue east to 7th Avenue to Route 36 eastbound.
• Motorists heading west on Route 36 will be directed to take 7th Avenue north to Atlantic Avenue west to Branchport Avenue to Route 36 westbound.
The detour routes were coordinated with the Long Branch Police Department. Access will be maintained to businesses and residential properties on either side of the rail line.
NJDOT will replace the existing crossing with a new concrete rail crossing and repave the asphalt approaches to provide a safer and smoother driving surface. The cost of the work is $282,000. This project is part of NJDOT’s ongoing railroad grade-crossing safety program which repairs, upgrades or removes approximately 30 crossings each year on state and local roadways.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website for construction updates and real-time travel information.
