Route 9 weekend closure plan detailed in Bass River
Garden State Parkway bridge construction project to require three weekend closures of state highway
(Trenton) - NJDOT and New Jersey Turnpike Authority (NJTA) officials today announced a series of three successive weekend closures of Route 9 in Bass River Township to accommodate ongoing construction of the new Garden State Parkway bridge over the Bass River.
Beginning at 9 p.m. this Friday, April 13, Route 9 is scheduled to be fully closed to through traffic in both directions between North Maple Avenue (CR 679) and East Greenbush Road (CR 654), until around 5 a.m. on Monday, April 16. Subsequent Route 9 closures are planned over the same timeframes for the weekends of April 20th thru 23rd, and April 27th thru 30th. Access will be maintained for local businesses and residents during the closures.
Separate detour routes will be used for passenger vehicles and large-trucks:
• Northbound passenger vehicles will be directed to turn left onto North Maple Avenue, right onto Stage Road and right onto East Greenbush Road before arriving back at Route 9 north of the work zone.
• Southbound passenger vehicles will be directed to turn right onto East Greenbush Road, left onto Stage Road and left onto North Maple Avenue before arriving back at Route 9 south of the work zone.
• Northbound and southbound trucks will be detoured onto the Garden State Parkway.
NJTA’s contractor, Northeast Remsco Construction, Inc., will utilize two portable Dynamic Message Signs at each end of the work zone to alert the motoring public of the closures and detours. The detour routes will be marked by signs.
The NJTA is building a new parallel bridge over the Bass River as part of $900 million project to widen the Garden State Parkway from two to three lanes in each direction in Ocean, Burlington and Atlantic counties. A new Bass River span is being built to the east of the existing span. Construction on the new span started in 2011 and is scheduled to be completed by 2013. Once the new span is open to traffic, the existing span will be redecked, repaired and upgraded. That work is scheduled to be completed by 2014.
The first phase of the GSP Widening Program added a third lane in each direction between Toms River and Stafford Township in Ocean County. Those lanes were completed and opened to traffic in May 2011. The second phase, which is underway, will add a third lane in each direction from Stafford Township to Bass River Township. The third phase is not yet scheduled.
The precise timing of the work at the Bass River Bridge is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information.
