NJDOT begins median guide rail installation on Interstate 80 in Morris County
(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) will install median guide rail along Interstate 80 in Roxbury and Mount Arlington in Morris County as part of NJDOT’s Cross Median Crash Prevention program.
“In 2010 we reached a milestone by installing median barriers along high-priority locations covering 134 miles of highway in New Jersey,” said DOT Commissioner Jim Simpson. “We continue to install guide rails to prevent crossover crashes at targeted locations.”
Earlier this week, NJDOT’s contractor, M. L. Ruberton Construction Co., Inc., has begun preparations to install cross median barriers on Interstate 80 between mileposts 28.15 and 28.81 and mileposts 29.18 and 32.46. To create a safe work zone in the median of the highway, temporary left-lane closures will be allowed on Interstate 80 in both directions during off-peak hours.
The approximately $1.7 million project, designed in-house by NJDOT engineers, is scheduled for completion by June.
NJDOT has designed and installed over 170 miles of cross median protection since 2004 at an approximate cost of $46 million. NJDOT ultimately will construct 200 miles of barrier to protect motorists from median crossover crashes along high-speed Interstates, freeways and expressways.
Variable message signs will notify motorists of upcoming traffic pattern changes. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.
