Route 208 traffic shifts announced over
Lafayette Avenue in Hawthorne
Bridge reconstruction project to enter next stage
(Trenton) - NJDOT officials today announced upcoming traffic pattern changes on Route 208 as bridge reconstruction operations enter the next stage over Lafayette Avenue (CR 665) in Hawthorne Borough, Passaic County.
NJDOT’s contractor, Ritacco Construction Inc., is scheduled to begin setting up the new construction zones in the center portion of Route 208 in each direction on Saturday night, May 5. Overnight lane closures will be utilized on Route 208 over the weekend for the installation of the construction barrier and traffic striping necessary to establish the new work zone, which will be in place by around 6 a.m. on Monday, May 7.
Once the new construction zones are in place, two travel lanes will be maintained in either direction of Route 208, split around either side of the new work zones. The outside deceleration/acceleration lanes will be utilized as travel-lanes during this stage of construction. Large trucks and buses will be directed to the stay to the right of the new construction zones. Dynamic Message Signs will provide motorists with advance notification of all traffic pattern changes.
During this stage of construction Lafayette Avenue will be closed to all traffic underneath Route 208.
• Lafayette Avenue southbound traffic will use Braen Avenue to Goffle Road to Lafayette Avenue.
• Lafayette Avenue northbound traffic will use Goffle Road to Braen Avenue to Lafayette Avenue.
This stage of construction is expected to last to late-July 2012.
The $3.1 million project will install a new concrete bridge structure over Lafayette Avenue and construct new bridge parapets and sidewalks. The approach slabs on Route 208 in both directions will be replaced and NJDOT will mill and repave the highway on either side of the bridge.
NJDOT has scheduled the construction in stages so that Route 208 will remain open to traffic in both directions at all times during construction.
Route 208 carries approximately 79,000 vehicles per day at this location. The project is scheduled for completion in fall 2012.
