NJDOT opens new railroad crossings
in Lower Township
Tabernacle Road and Breakwater Road extended
to improve traffic flow

(Trenton) - NJDOT officials today announced the opening of two new local roadway extensions and railroad crossings on Tabernacle Road and Breakwater Road in Lower Township, Cape May County.

Early last week NJDOT’s contractor, South State Inc., opened the newly extended roadways, while closing the old railroad crossings at Bennetts Crossing and Sally Marshall/Cresse Lane.

NJDOT began the $7.1 million project in February 2011 to reconstruct and widen sections of Route 9 between mileposts 3.9 and 5.7. The two new intersections have been created by extending Tabernacle Road and Breakwater Road to Route 9.

The project also includes widening Seashore Road (which runs parallel to Route 9) at the Tabernacle Road and Breakwater Road intersections and pavement rehabilitation on Route 9, as well as Seashore, Breakwater and Tabernacle roads. New turning slots, traffic signals, and storm water detention systems are also being added at certain locations throughout the project limits.

The new railroad safety signal arms and warning devices will be installed by Cape May Seashore railroad in the coming weeks.

Utility relocation work, landscaping work and final surface course paving and striping work continues at this time. Completion of the project remains on schedule for July 2012, pending the completion of the necessary work by the railroad company.

Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website for construction updates and real-time travel information.
