Route 31 traffic shift scheduled over Shabbecong Creek in Washington Borough
Bridge superstructure replacement progresses
into next stage of construction
(Trenton) - NJDOT officials today announced a traffic pattern change on Route 31 as bridge reconstruction operations enter the next stage over the Shabbecong Creek in Washington Borough, Warren County.
NJDOT’s contractor, Konkus Corporation, is scheduled to set up the new construction zone on the northbound side of the bridge Friday night, June 1. To accommodate that work, NJDOT will shift two-way traffic onto the newly rebuilt southbound half of the bridge. Route 31 will remain reduced from two travel lanes in each direction to one travel lane, which will be maintained during peak period hours. This stage of construction is anticipated to last approximately six months.
Periodic single-lane closures will be necessary on the bridge with alternating traffic patterns in place during overnight and off-peak hours.
The $1.4 million federally-funded project began construction in November 2011 to replace the structurally deficient bridge superstructure and resurface the bridge approaches. The original bridge was built in 1935, located immediately to the south of Route 31 intersection with Route 57.
Approximately 15,000 vehicles use this bridge every day to cross the Shabbecong Creek. NJDOT has coordinated with Washington Borough officials throughout the design process.
Dynamic message signs will notify motorists of all associated traffic pattern changes. The project is expected to be complete in fall 2012.
