Route 28 resurfacing announced by NJDOT
Pavement condition to be improved in Bound Brook,
Middlesex and Dunellen
(Trenton) - NJDOT officials today announced a project to resurface more than five miles of Route 28 in both directions from the vicinity of the Green Brook in Bound Brook Borough, Somerset County to just east of Hamilton Avenue in Dunellen, Middlesex County.
“This much-needed resurfacing of Route 28 demonstrates NJDOT’s commitment to improving our state’s transportation infrastructure and providing safe travel for motorists,” DOT Commissioner James Simpson said.
NJDOT’s contractor, Schifano Construction, is scheduled to start preliminary construction activities including site mobilization and sign installation this week, requiring shoulder closures. The $2.3 million project will resurface Route 28 in both directions with a new surface course of asphalt pavement from milepost 7.4 in Bound Brook, through Middlesex Borough to milepost 12.5 in Dunellen. The contractor will also be making some full-depth concrete repairs to the roadway at certain locations.
Mainline resurfacing operations are expected to begin by early-August. Work requiring single-lane closures will be performed during overnight and off-peak hours in order to minimize traffic impacts on Route 28, a heavily traveled east-west corridor in central New Jersey. Access to all businesses and residences along the state highway will be maintained throughout construction.
Upgraded signage, roadway striping and guide rail will also be provided as needed. New image detection cameras will be installed at certain intersections to replace the existing, underground loop detectors. These cameras are linked to traffic signals and help maximize the capacity of Route 28.
The project was designed in-house by NJDOT engineers. Construction is scheduled for completion in fall 2012.
