Route 322 to be resurfaced in Monroe Township
(Trenton) - NJDOT officials today announced a project to resurface more than four miles of Route 322 (Black Horse Pike) in both directions from east of the S. Main Street intersection to just west of Seymour Street in Monroe Township, Gloucester County.
“This much-needed resurfacing of Route 322 in Monroe demonstrates NJDOT’s commitment to preserving our roads in a state-of-good repair and providing safe travel for all motorists,” Transportation Commissioner James Simpson said.
NJDOT’s contractor, Arawak Paving Co., is scheduled to start preliminary construction activities including site mobilization and sign installation this week, requiring shoulder closures. The $2.5 million project will resurface Route 322 in both directions with a new surface course of asphalt pavement between mileposts 25.9 and 30.7 in Monroe.
Mainline resurfacing operations will begin by mid-July. Resurfacing work will require single-lane closures in each direction. One lane will be maintained in each direction at all times on Route 322, an important east-west corridor and shore route.
• During the summer months, from May 15 through September 15, construction restrictions will be in place prohibiting any weekend lane closures.
• Access to all businesses and residences along the state highway will be maintained throughout construction.
Drainage inlet upgrades and new roadway striping and raised-pavement markings will also be provided throughout the project limits. New image detection cameras will be installed at certain intersections to replace the existing, underground loop detectors. These cameras are linked to traffic signals and help maximize the capacity of Route 322.
Route 322 carries approximately 20,000 vehicles per day through this location, but that number rises during the summer season. The project is scheduled for completion in fall 2012.
Dynamic message signs will notify motorists of upcoming traffic pattern changes. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website for real-time travel information.
