Route 36 resurfacing announced
in northern Monmouth County
Project to improve deteriorated sections of pavement
on Route 36 between Highlands and Hazlet

NJDOT’s contractor, Stavola Contracting Co., is scheduled to start preliminary construction activities including site mobilization and sign installation next week, requiring shoulder closures. The $9 million project will resurface Route 36 with a new surface course of asphalt:

• Northbound from east of Miller Street in Highlands (milepost 11.8) through Atlantic Highlands and Middletown to the vicinity of Union Avenue in Hazlet/Union Beach (milepost 22.15).
• Southbound from Naval Weapons Station Earle (milepost 17) in Middletown to east of Miller Street in Highlands (milepost 11.8).

Mainline resurfacing operations are expected to begin later this summer. Work requiring single-lane closures will be performed during overnight and off-peak hours in order to minimize traffic impacts on Route 36, a heavily traveled shore route in central New Jersey. Paving work on entrance/exit ramps will require periodic local detours. Access to all businesses and residences along the state highway will be maintained throughout construction.

Upgraded roadway striping, ADA-compliant curb ramps and guide rail will also be provided as needed. New image detection cameras will be installed at certain intersections to replace the existing, underground loop detectors. These cameras are linked to traffic signals and help maximize the capacity of Route 36.

Dynamic Message Signs will provide motorists with advance notification of traffic pattern changes. The project, which was designed in-house by NJDOT engineers, is scheduled to be completed in early summer-2013.

NJDOT resurfaced Route 36 southbound in Middletown, Hazlet and Union Beach under a separate contract last year.
