Route 31 traffic to be restored over
Shabbecong Creek in Washington Borough
Bridge superstructure replacement completed
(Trenton) - NJDOT officials today announced that the Route 31 bridge reconstruction over the Shabbecong Creek has been completed and
traffic will be restored to the normal configuration this weekend in Washington Borough, Warren County.
NJDOT’s contractor, Konkus Corporation, has replaced the old structurally deficient bridge superstructure with a new cast-in-place concrete deck. The
reconstruction work was accomplished in stages, requiring that Route 31 be reduced from two travel lanes in each direction to one travel lane in each
direction for the past ten months. Full capacity is planned to be restored, with Route 31 again carrying two travel lanes in each direction over the
bridge, on Saturday morning, September 8.
The contractor will now resurface and restripe the bridge approaches and take care of other punchlist items. The $1.4 million federally-funded
project is expected to be complete later this fall 2012.
The original bridge was built in 1935, located immediately to the south of Route 31 intersection with Route 57. Approximately 15,000 vehicles
use this bridge every day to cross the Shabbecong Creek.
Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org real-time travel
information.
