Regional resurfacing contract
to repair sections of deteriorated highways
in Cumberland and Salem counties

(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced a regional maintenance resurfacing and roadway repair project in Cumberland and Salem counties.

Beginning this week, NJDOT will mill and repave deteriorated sections of asphalt roadway at numerous locations on three different highways:

• Route 45 in both directions from just south of Fenwick Creek in Salem City (milepost 0.37) to just north of Mannington Creek in Mannington Township (milepost 4.12) in Salem County.
• Route 47 (Delsea Drive) in both directions from north of Henderson Avenue (milepost 39.3) to just south of High Street (milepost 41.7) in Millville City in Cumberland County.
• Route 49 in both directions from west of Hook Road (milepost 0.1) to east of Chestnut Lane (milepost 5.7) in Pennsville Township in Salem County.
• Route 49 in both directions from east of CR 638/N. Burlington Road in Bridgeton City (milepost 27) through Fairfield Township to CR 634/Nabb Avenue in Millville City (milepost 31.4) in Cumberland County.

The approximately $8.4 million contract will improve motorist safety and extend the pavement lifespan along the full width of the roadway at each location, including all travel lanes, turn lanes, shoulders and median openings. Curbing and sidewalk upgrades will be made at certain locations as well. New image detection cameras will be installed at certain intersections to replace the existing, underground loop detectors. These cameras are linked to traffic signals and help maximize the capacity of each highway.

NJDOT’s maintenance contractor, South State Inc., will begin initial construction activity on Route 49 in Cumberland County this week. The work will be performed under the allowable lane closures schedule, maintaining at least one travel lane in at each location during peak travel hours. Traffic shifts, single-lane closures and alternating traffic will be utilized at certain locations. Access to all businesses will be maintained. The project is anticipated to be complete early next summer, 2013.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information.
