Route 3 westbound full capacity restored over Hackensack River
Major bridge reconstruction work completed
(Trenton) - NJDOT officials today announced that reconstruction of the Route 3 westbound bridge over the Hackensack River has been completed and full capacity has been restored to the highway connecting Secaucus, Hudson County and East Rutherford, Bergen County.
NJDOT’s contractor, Beaver Concrete Construction Co., completed the reconstruction work on the right-most travel lane on the bridge last week and opened the roadway in the original traffic configuration on Saturday, October 27. NJDOT rehabilitated the westbound bridge deck in stages to keep three lanes of traffic open and limit the impact to motorists on this heavily traveled highway.
Also, the temporary stop sign that had been place at the ramp from Meadowlands Parkway to Route 3 westbound has been removed. Truck traffic is again allowed to use this ramp.
The ongoing $17.6 million project is rehabilitating the two individual, structurally deficient bridges carrying Route 3 eastbound and westbound over the Hackensack River. The Route 3 eastbound bridge was built about 1934 and modified in 1964. The Route 3 westbound bridge was constructed in 1963. The repairs to the westbound bridge were more extensive than those needed on the eastbound structure.
The contractor is now focused on finalizing punch-list items and construction zone clean up. The project began in February 2011 and remains on schedule for completion in by the end of 2012.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information.
