NJDOT restores South Marginal Street
to two travel lanes in Weehawken
Bridge deck replacement project over Park Avenue
nears completion
(Trenton) - South Marginal Street was restored to two travel lanes heading eastbound yesterday in Weehawken, NJDOT officials announced.
NJDOT’s contractor, Sparwick Contracting Inc., has completed the replacement of the old structurally-deficient bridge deck over Park Avenue at this location. The bridge deck replacement was accomplished in stages, which required the reduction of one travel lane throughout construction. NJDOT did ensure that one travel lane was open at all times.
Periodic lane closures will now be necessary during daytime hours for the next few weeks to complete final paving, striping and other contractual work on South Marginal Street.
South Marginal Street is a one-way (eastbound) connector roadway running parallel to the Route 495 eastbound elevated highway leading to the Lincoln Tunnel. South Marginal Street carries traffic underneath the Lincoln Tunnel helix, providing access to Weehawken and Hoboken waterfront destinations as well as to the Lincoln Tunnel.
The project also made structural repairs to an adjacent section of the Route 495 viaduct support structure. NJDOT coordinated the project impacts with NJ TRANSIT’s bus operations.
Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information.
