NJDOT issues safety announcements
for Thanksgiving weekend
Construction activity to be suspended promoting safety
and reducing congestion

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) Commissioner James Simpson today issued safety announcements in advance of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, including the suspension of all planned roadway construction activity.

To accommodate the anticipated additional traffic, NJDOT at 6 a.m. Wednesday, November 21 will suspend all construction work that affects travel lanes on state highways. NJDOT will continue the suspension until noon on Monday, November 26. NJDOT will permit lane closures for emergencies only.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, Route 35 in Ocean County remains an active construction zone from Bay Head to the southern terminus at Island Beach State Park. Access continues to be controlled by local law enforcement.

“We urge motorists to exercise caution on the State’s roads and to allow extra time to ensure safe travel to their destinations,” Simpson said.

In addition, NJDOT announced the following statewide highway safety initiatives:

• The state-of-the-art Statewide Traffic Management Center enables NJDOT, the New Jersey Turnpike Authority and the New Jersey State Police to manage and respond to accidents, adverse weather, special events and congestion. The facility operates 24 hours per day, seven days per week.
• NJDOT provides real time traffic information and images along with emergency roadway information and construction schedule updates at www.511nj.org
• Motorists can also call 511 anytime for personalized real-time traffic information.
• In accordance with the NJ State Police and Division of Highway Traffic Safety’s Safe Passage campaign this season, Dynamic Message Signs along state highways will display a “Buckle Up” message from Tuesday, November 20 through Monday, November 26.

Drivers are encouraged to call the following numbers for roadside assistance or to report a disabled vehicle, roadside debris or other problems;

- On the Turnpike, call #95.
- On the Parkway, call #GSP (#477).
- On the Atlantic City Expressway, call #ACE (#223).
