Route 27 resurfacing announced in
Middlesex and Union counties
NJDOT to address almost ten miles of deteriorated pavement
on busy state highway

NJDOT’s contractor, Joseph Defino Trucking, is scheduled to start preliminary construction activities including site mobilization and sign installation next week. Initial construction efforts will focus on electrical work and curb and some sidewalk.

The $12.4 million project includes milling, paving and restriping almost ten miles of Route 27 from Elizabeth City through Roselle, Linden, Rahway, Woodbridge and into Edison. Resurfacing operations are scheduled to begin after March 15, with the contractor beginning construction in Elizabeth and working southward.

Route 27 is a heavily traveled arterial route in central New Jersey so the Department has scheduled construction around peak period travel hours in order to minimize traffic impacts.

• In the two lane sections of the highway (one travel lane in each direction) the contractor will work during overnight hours with alternating traffic, and sometimes between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. with traffic shifts, maintaining both lanes.
• In the four lane sections (two travel lanes in each direction) the contractor will work between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. with single lane closures, maintaining one lane in each direction.

The project will improve motorist safety and extend the pavement lifespan along the full width of the roadway at each location, including all travel lanes, turn lanes, shoulders and median openings. Upgraded signage and roadway striping will also be provided as needed. The project also includes minor repair work to the Route 27 bridges over the Garden State Parkway in Woodbridge and the Peach Orchard Brook in Linden.

Traffic signal modifications and ADA-compliant curb ramp upgrades will be included at certain locations. New image detection cameras will be installed at certain intersections to replace the existing, underground loop detectors. These cameras are linked to traffic signals and help maximize the capacity of Route 27.

NJDOT anticipates project completion in fall 2014.

NJDOT will use variable messaging signs to inform motorists of the construction and any traffic pattern changes associated with the project. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.
