Utility work on underground circuit
to require lane closures along Route 1&9
in Elizabeth and Newark
(Trenton) - A PSE&G utility project to install new underground circuit running along a three mile stretch of Route 1&9 southbound is scheduled to begin later this month in the cities of Elizabeth and Newark.
The work will require access underneath the highway, necessitating travel lane, shoulder and ramp closures at numerous locations along Route 1&9 southbound Local lanes between milepost 48.6 (just south of the NJ Turnpike Entrance ramp) and milepost 45.5 (vicinity of North Avenue).
The work is being performed under a regional utility permit allowing the utility contractor access to the state highway to make the necessary underground repairs. The project should be completed by early-summer.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information.
