NJDOT announces Route 3 resurfacing project
in Meadowlands area
Critical project to improve over four miles of deteriorated highway
(Trenton) - NJDOT officials today announced a project to resurface more than four miles of Route 3 in both directions, from just west of the Route 17 interchange to the interchange with Route 1&9, through the boroughs of Rutherford and East Rutherford in Bergen County and Secaucus and North Bergen in Hudson County.
NJDOT’s contractor, Crisdel Group Inc., has begun preliminary construction activities this week including site mobilization, drainage inlet work and sign and crash cushion installation, requiring shoulder closures.
The $8.6 million project will improve motorist safety and extend the pavement lifespan along the full width of the roadway including all travel lanes, turn lanes, shoulders and median openings. Upgraded signage, guide rail and roadway striping will be provided as needed and traffic signal modifications and ADA-compliant curb ramp upgrades will be included at certain locations.
“This project will provide a smoother and safer Route 3 to the benefit thousands of motorists, demonstrating the Christie Administration’s commitment to funding state-of-good-repair projects throughout New Jersey,” NJDOT Commissioner James Simpson said.
Work requiring double and single-lane closures will be performed during overnight hours in order to minimize traffic impacts on heavily-traveled Route 3, which variably carries between four-to-six travel lanes through the work area. Paving operations on exit and entrance ramps will require periodic overnight closures, with short detours, as well.
Route 3 is a major commuter route to New York City with an average daily traffic volume of around 142,000 vehicles. The roadway directly connects to the Lincoln Tunnel, New Jersey Turnpike, Garden State Parkway, Route 17, Route 46 and Route 21 serving major economic interests such as the Meadowlands sports complex and numerous retail and entertainment complexes.
Construction operations will be prohibited during events at the Izod Center, MetLife Stadium or Meadowlands Racetrack. Access to all businesses along the state highway will be maintained throughout construction. The project - which is being coordinated with the ongoing Route 3 Passaic River bridge replacement just to the west - is scheduled for completion in early-fall 2013.
NJDOT will use variable messaging signs to inform motorists of the construction and any traffic pattern changes associated with the project. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.
