Route 208 resurfacing announced for Fair Lawn
and Glen Rock
NJDOT to address over three miles of deteriorated pavement
(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced that Route 208 will be resurfaced in both directions from the southern terminus of the highway at the interchange with Route 4 (milepost 0.0) in Fair Lawn to just south of Lincoln Avenue (milepost 3.4) in Glen Rock, Bergen County.
NJDOT’s contractor, Dello Pello Construction., has begun preliminary construction activities including site mobilization, sign installation and minor deck patching work this week. Mainline resurfacing operations are expected to ramp up in April.
Route 208 - which carries between four-to-six travel lanes through the work area - is a heavily traveled urban freeway in northeastern New Jersey so the Department has scheduled construction around peak period travel hours to minimize traffic impacts.
• In the four-lane sections of the highway (two travel lanes in each direction) the contractor will work during overnight hours (after 9 p.m.) with single lane closures, maintaining one travel lane at all times.
• In the six-lane sections (three travel lanes in each direction) the contractor will work between
9 a.m. and 3 p.m. with single lane closures and during overnight hours (after 8 p.m.) with single and double lane closures, maintaining one travel lane at all times.
• Paving operations on exit and entrance ramps will require periodic overnight closures, with short detours, as well.
The $8.8 million project will improve motorist safety and extend the pavement lifespan along the full width of the roadway at each location, including all travel lanes, turn lanes, shoulders and median openings. Upgraded signage and roadway striping will also be provided as needed. The project also includes minor surface repair work to five individual bridge structures within the project limits.
Traffic signal modifications and ADA-compliant curb ramp upgrades will be included at certain locations. New image detection cameras will be installed at certain intersections to replace the existing, underground loop detectors. These cameras are linked to traffic signals and help maximize the capacity of Route 208.
NJDOT anticipates that the project, which was designed in-house by NJDOT engineers, will be completed in early-fall 2013.
NJDOT will use variable messaging signs to inform motorists of the construction and any traffic pattern changes associated with the project. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.
