Regional resurfacing contract to repair sections
of deteriorated pavement in Hudson, Morris
and Union counties

(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced the beginning of a regional maintenance resurfacing and roadway repair project this week in northern New Jersey.

NJDOT will mill and repave deteriorated sections of asphalt and concrete roadway at three locations in Hudson, Morris and Union counties:

  • Route 1&9 in both directions from just south of the Interstate 278 interchange (milepost 42.2) in Linden to north of CR 624/North Avenue (milepost 45.5) in Elizabeth, Union County.
  • Route 1&9 southbound travel lanes and northbound outside shoulder and intersections, south of Allen Street (milepost 54.9) in Jersey City to south of Route 3 (milepost 57) in North Bergen, Hudson County.
  • Route 24 eastbound from the Interstate 287 interchange (milepost 0) in Hanover to milepost 1 in Morris Township, Morris County.

The approximately $6.9 million contract will improve motorist safety and extend the pavement lifespan along the full width of the roadway at each location, including all travel lanes, turn lanes, shoulders and median openings. Curb and sidewalk repairs will be made at some locations and all utility hardware (manholes) will be rest within the roadway to improve final surface course rideability. The highways will be restriped and new image-detection cameras will be installed at selected intersections to replace the existing underground loop detectors.

NJDOT’s maintenance contractor, Stavola Contracting Inc., will begin initial construction activity on Route Route 1&9 in Jersey City this week.

The mainline resurfacing work will be performed under the allowable lane closures schedule, maintaining at least one travel lane in at each location during peak travel hours. Daytime shoulder closures, with traffic shifts, will be allowed for the curb and sidewalk repairs. Access to all businesses will be maintained and the entire project is expected to wrap-up this fall 2013.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information.
