Regional resurfacing contract to improve deteriorated pavement in Middlesex and Somerset counties
NJDOT to improve motorist safety along stretches
of Routes 18, 26 and 27
(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced a regional maintenance resurfacing and roadway repair project is expected to begin construction this week in central New Jersey.
NJDOT will mill and repave deteriorated sections of asphalt and concrete roadway on three different highways in Middlesex and Somerset counties - at the following locations:
- Route 18 in both directions between the NJ TRANSIT railroad bridge in New Brunswick (near milepost 42.6) and the existing northern terminus of the highway in Piscataway (milepost 45.3).
- Route 26 in both directions from the Route 1 interchange (milepost 0) to just north of CR 680/Howe Lane (milepost 1.45) in North Brunswick
- Route 27 in both directions from the vicinity of Vliet Road (milepost 8.6) at the border of South Brunswick and Franklin to north of Evelyn Avenue (milepost 10.76) at the border of North Brunswick and Franklin.
The $5.7 million contract will improve motorist safety and extend the pavement lifespan along the full width of the roadway at each location, including all travel lanes, turn lanes, vicinity of side streets, ramp and shoulders. All utility hardware (manholes) will be rest within the roadway to improve final surface course rideability. The highways will be restriped and new image-detection cameras will be installed at selected intersections to replace the existing underground loop detectors.
NJDOT’s maintenance contractor, Intercounty Paving, plans to begin initial construction activity on Route 18 this week. The work will be performed under the allowable lane closures schedule, maintaining at least one travel lane in at each location during peak period travel hours. Access to all businesses will be maintained. All work in the contract is expected to complete in late-fall 2013.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website for real-time travel information.
