Route 22 eastbound to be restricted to
one
travel
lane at Mountain Avenue
ramp in Somerville
'Sustainable
Corridor' safety upgrade and congestion
relief
project advances between
Route 202/206 and Interstate 287
(Trenton) - NJDOT
officials today announced that a
small stretch of Route 22 eastbound
will be restricted to one travel
lane at Mountain Avenue for approximately
seven weeks in Bridgewater and Somerville.
In order to install a new drainage
system and make curb and pavement
repairs along Route 22 eastbound
between the interchange with Route
202/206 and Mountain Avenue, NJDOT's
contractor, Green Construction,
Inc., is scheduled to close the
right travel
lane to through traffic tomorrow
night, May 3.
This will reduce the number of
available travel lanes between
the two interchanges – for an approximate
0.3-mile stretch – from two lanes
to one lane until mid-June. If
the work is accomplished earlier,
then the travel lane will be reopened
accordingly.
Variable message signs are being
utilized to notify Route 22 motorists
of all traffic pattern changes.
The work is included as part
of the $7.9 million safety improvement
and congestion relief project that
began in February along
a three mile stretch of Route 22 in
Bridgewater and Somerville, Somerset
County. The project will reconstruct
and widen the existing highway shoulders
to provide for new auxiliary acceleration/deceleration
lanes along Route 22, creating safer
and improved access at key locations.
In addition, the project includes
myriad design and technological upgrades
intended to improve traffic flow
through the corridor.
The project is scheduled for completion
in early-summer 2014.
Outside of this specific construction
phase, NJDOT will maintain all
available travel lanes on Route
22 between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. during
the week. The work is being accomplished
with overnight lane closures and
permanent shoulder closures with
traffic shifts.
The precise timing of the work
is subject to change due to weather or
other factors. Motorists are
encouraged to check www.511nj.org for
real-time travel information. |
