Route 9 bridge deck replacement completed
over Westecunk Creek
Highway restored to original traffic pattern this morning
in Eagleswood Township
(Trenton) - NJDOT officials today announced that the Route 9 bridge deck replacement over the Westecunk Creek in Eagleswood Township, Ocean County has been completed and the highway was restored to the normal lane configuration this morning.
The Department’s $2.9 million federally-funded project began preliminary construction in March 2012. NJDOT’s contractor, Ritacco Construction Inc., replaced the old structurally-deficient bridge deck in stages, allowing NJDOT to maintain one lane of Route 9 in both directions during peak hours through the construction zone.
The new structure stands approximately 22-inches higher than the previous one, to meet current federal standards and help mitigate the flooding issues that have troubled Route 9 at this location. The new bridge features one 12-foot wide travel lane and a 10-foot wide shoulder in each direction. In addition, new sidewalks have been provided on both sides of the bridge.
The bridge - originally built in 1925 - carries approximately 13,000 vehicles every day over the Westecunk Creek, but that number rises in the summer season.
