New Route 22 Liberty Avenue viaduct open
in final configuration in Hillside
Major $23 million project wrapping up after
three years of construction
(Trenton) - NJDOT officials today announced that the new Route 22 viaduct over Liberty Avenue in Hillside, Union County has been completed and opened to traffic in the final configuration.
NJDOT’s contractor, Union Paving and Construction Inc., shifted all Route 22 travel lanes onto the recently completed new viaduct last week, following the completion of the new southbound sidewalk. The contractor has also completed final surface paving of the highway throughout the project limits.
The $23 million project has replaced the old, structurally deficient viaduct with two new separate structures: a single span bridge over the ShopRite access road and a multiple span bridge over Liberty Avenue and Conrail. The new viaduct was built on a new alignment, 23 feet to the south of the old structure. Shifting the roadway alignment to the south allowed NJDOT to maintain traffic on Route 22 during construction.
NJDOT has also constructed a 12 foot high noise barrier along the length of the township park along Route 22 westbound, improved existing substandard roadway features and upgraded the drainage system within the project limits. The project was funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).
Construction began in June 2010 and final completion is expected by the end of the summer, as the contractor completes minor punchlist items associated with the contract.
Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information.
