NJDOT to replace Route 4 bridge deck
over Flat Rock Brook in Englewood
Structurally-deficient bridge to be replaced with pre-cast
deck panels over two weekend periods

New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the replacement of the Route 4 bridge deck over Flat Rock Brook in Englewood City, Bergen County. The $1.5 million state-funded project will replace the existing, deteriorated structure with a new pre-cast concrete bridge deck.
The construction will take place in several stages through July and August. Initial construction will begin Monday, July 1, and Tuesday, July 2, with the contractor, Creamer-Sanzari Inc., conducting slab stabilization work requiring lane closures in both the eastbound and westbound directions. At least one travel will be maintained in each direction during this initial work. The eastbound lanes will have a single lane closure from 9 p.m. through 6 a.m. and a double lane closure from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. on both Monday and Tuesday nights. The westbound lane will have one lane closed from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. on both nights.
No construction work will be done beginning at 6 a.m. on Wednesday, July 3, through 12 p.m. (Noon) on Monday, July 8, for the July 4th Holiday weekend.
After the holiday, work will advance with the milling of the bridge asphalt and removal of the concrete slab, requiring overnight lane closures. A temporary structure and steel plates will be installed.
The new bridge deck will be manufactured off site and installed by the contractor over two separate weekends. One direction of Route 4 will be fully closed to traffic and detoured each weekend for the bridge deck installation expected to take place in late July or early August. The use of pre-cast concrete bridge components will enable NJDOT to significantly shorten the construction schedule and minimize impacts to traffic.
NJDOT will provide notification to the public in advance of the planned Route 4 closures.
In addition to the replacement of the existing bridge deck, NJDOT will resurface the bridge approaches on Route 4 in both directions. Construction is scheduled for completion later this summer.
NJDOT will employ variable message signs to notify motorists of the upcoming bridge closures. A public information center was held in March to provide interested residents with the opportunity to review exhibits of the project, ask questions and discuss issues with representatives.
