Important resurfacing project set to begin
on Route 284 in Sussex County
More than seven miles of deteriorated pavement
to be improved in both directions
(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced a project to resurface the entirety of Route 284 (just over seven miles) in both directions from southern terminus at Route 23 in Sussex Borough to the New York state line in Wantage Township, Sussex County.
NJDOT’s contractor, Schifano Construction Corp, is scheduled to start preliminary construction activities including site mobilization and sign installation this week, requiring some shoulder closures.
The $3.9 million project will resurface Route 284 in both directions with a new surface course of asphalt pavement. The project will improve motorist safety and extend the pavement lifespan along the full width of the roadway, including all travel lanes, turn lanes and shoulders. Upgraded roadway striping, ADA-compliant curb ramps and guide rail will be provided as needed. In addition, the contractor will perform surface repairs on eight individual bridge structures along Route 284.
NJDOT scheduled the paving work to be done during overnight and off-peak hours to minimize the impacts this project will have on motorists and businesses in the area. Single lane closures with alternating traffic patterns are allowed Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. and Saturday 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. and Sunday from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following morning. This project is being coordinated with the ongoing Route 23 realignment project that began construction in April in Sussex Borough.
Route 284 carries one travel lane in each direction over the entire seven mile length. Access to all businesses and residences along the state highway will be maintained throughout construction. The project - designed in-house by NJDOT engineers to improve the surface course rideability of the roadway - is scheduled for completion by the end of 2013.
Portable variable message signs will notify motorists of the upcoming construction and any associated traffic pattern changes. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information.
