Railroad-crossing repair on Bellemead Road
(Route 601) in Montgomery will require road closure
Work expected to take five days with local detours in place

Bellemead Road is scheduled to be closed to traffic in both directions at the CSX freight rail crossing, just south of Grandview Road, from 9 a.m. on Monday, July 29 to around 7 a.m. on Friday, August 2. Traffic will be detoured using Sunset Road, Route 206, and West Dutchtown-Harlingen Road. If the work is completed earlier, the roadway will be reopened accordingly.

In order to provide a safer and smoother railroad crossing in Montgomery the freight rail contractor will replace the existing crossing with a new concrete freight rail crossing and repave the asphalt approaches. New safety barrier gates will be installed at all four quadrants at the crossing and new median barriers will be installed. The existing traffic signals are being relocated to conform to the modified crossing. Preliminary work has been ongoing at this location for the past few weeks, without impacting traffic.

This project is included within NJDOT’s railroad grade-crossing safety program which repairs, upgrades or removes approximately 30 crossings each year, statewide. The project is being jointly funded by NJDOT and Somerset County, with an overall cost of around $520,000.
